Biography
Porto, 1873: a restless dreamer named Francisco Santos enters the world and, long before the word “filmmaker” exists, begins turning light into stories. By 1913 he has conjured up A Mulher do Chiqueiro, followed swiftly by the scandal-laced O Crime dos Banhados and the heartbreak-laden Amor de Perdição—each one a silent thunderclap in Portugal’s infancy of cinema. Two decades later, the reels have stopped spinning, and Santos—now a Brazilian citizen—takes his final bow in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, 1937, leaving behind the flickering shadows that first taught Portugal to dream in moving images.
