Biography

A Manhattan spring welcomed Frank Gillmore on 14 May 1867, and the city’s bright marquees would one day carry his name. Between cue pick-ups he breathed life into silent-era stories, most memorably as the tortured artist in 1917’s The Lifted Veil and the wandering painter in 1915’s The Fairy and the Waif. Off-screen he shared his life with actress Laura Margaret MacGillivray, their partnership as steady as the footlights that framed his career. Gillmore’s final curtain fell back home in New York City on 29 March 1943, leaving the stage—and the silver screen—poorer for his exit.
