Biography

While indelibly etched in cinematic history as the intrepid Captain Englehorn, the steadfast leader of the expedition to capture the formidable ape in 1933's *King Kong*—a role he reprised in its immediate sequel, *Son of Kong*—Frank Reicher's career spanned a far vaster landscape. Boasting over 200 film credits, his pre-*Kong* legacy already included extensive work as a respected stage actor and director, and a burgeoning film director. Born in Munich, Germany, in 1875, Reicher honed his craft in Europe before crossing the Atlantic in 1899 to grace the New York stage. His considerable success there soon lured him to Hollywood by 1915, where he seamlessly transitioned into both acting in and directing motion pictures. A brief sabbatical saw him return to the New York theatrical scene in 1921, but the allure of Hollywood proved irresistible, pulling him back permanently in 1926. From then on, Reicher cultivated a remarkably prolific career, contributing his talents as an actor and director to nearly all the major studios. He was not only highly esteemed as a filmmaker but also revered as an acting teacher within the industry. During the tumultuous World War II era, his distinctive presence often saw him cast as either stern Nazi officials or courageous anti-Nazi partisans. He also ventured into the macabre, portraying a professor in *The Mummy's Tomb* (1942), a character he revisited in *The Mummy's Ghost* (1944), and frequently appeared as a succession of mad scientists or their eerie assistants in numerous other Universal horror classics. His final cinematic appearance was in 1951, bringing a distinguished career to a close. Frank Reicher passed away in 1965.
