Biography
Oakland, California, greeted Franklyn Hall on 25 January 1886, and by 1913 he was already breathing life into the tragic grandeur of *Tess of the D'Urbervilles*. Two years later he confronted morality and medicine in *Where Are My Children?* (1916), then sealed his silent-era reputation with the tormented drama *A Branded Soul* (1917).
