Biography
Manhattan’s West Side welcomed Fred C. Jones on 24 August 1884, and from that first cry he seemed destined to trade in make-believe. By 1916 he strode through the moral battleground of *The Gates of Eden*, then slipped into the velvet-trimmed desperation of *A Beggar in Purple* and the sand-swept swagger of *An Arabian Knight*, both released in 1920. Though the cameras stopped turning, Jones kept the city’s pulse for another forty-six winters, quietly bowing out in January 1966, still on the island that had always been his stage.
