Biography
May 1872: a New Yorker named Fred Hornby enters the world just as Broadway’s gaslights are flaring to life. By 1913 he is juggling greasepaint and megaphone, first guiding Mr. Pickwick and his chortling club through three reel-length chapters, then turning camera-eyed to the Catskill ridges for 1923’s The Call of the Hills. Fifty-six Aprils later, on the 14th of 1929, he exits stage-left in the same city where his story began, leaving flickering shadows of Pickwickian humor and mountain melodrama to speak for him.
