Biography
Fred Paul entered the world on 11 November 1880 in Lausanne, Switzerland, and spent the next eight-and-a-half decades turning that quiet arrival into a noisy, camera-flashing career. In front of the lens he could steal a scene; behind it he could orchestrate whole worlds, coaxing chills from audiences with The Coughing Horror (1924), wringing hearts with The Broken Melody (1929), and sketching shadows across scarred lives in The Scarred Face (1928). Off-set he answered to one leading lady only—Charlotte Ann Hockenhull, his wife. The final curtain fell in 1967, when Paul took his last bow in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, leaving the screen a little dimmer and film history a little richer.
