Biography
Fred Rains cracked the London fog on 31 January 1860, drawing breath in Westminster and soon drawing audiences across three artforms. Between the first flicker of British cinema and the roar of the talkies, he acted or directed everything from the 1911 moorland saga Dan Nolan’s Cross to the 1926 Restoration romp Nell Gwyn, with the Welsh mining epic Land of My Fathers (1921) staked proudly in between. The footlights finally dimmed for him on 3 December 1945, when he took his exit in Hackney, leaving the city where his story began to echo his credits a little longer.
