Biography
Graz, 14 July 1886: the day the city’s medieval streets gained the boy who would trade cobblestones for celluloid dreams. By 1919 Fred Sauer had swapped Styrian dialect for the grammar of silent shadows, orchestrating passions in *Im Dienste der Liebe* and plumbing Berlin’s underbelly in *Die Gesunkenen*. A year later he steered cameras through incense-laced mysteries for *Der indische Tod*, proving his knack for turning flickers into fever dreams. Thirty-three summers after his first clapperboard snapped, the projectors of Berlin fell silent for him on 17 September 1952, closing the final reel on a life lived frame by luminous frame.
