Biography

December 6, 1887, Findlay, Ohio—amid the gas-boom clangor of a midwestern oil town—delivered Fred Whitman to the world. Within two decades he had traded engine grease for greasepaint, stepping before cameras that were still learning how to blink. In 1915 alone he haunted two of that year’s sensation-makers: the marriage-in-crisis melodrama Should a Wife Forgive? and the cliff-hanging serial The Red Circle. Two years later he donned villainy’s sneer again in A Branded Soul, sealing his silhouette to the nickelodeon era. The final curtain fell on October 11, 1945, in Los Angeles, where the lights that once etched his face onto flickering nitrate now stay permanently dimmed.
