Biography

Born under the bright southern sun of Nîmes on 3 May 1874, Frédéric Moriss first stepped in front of a camera as the twentieth century was still finding its feet. While moviegoers today remember him chiefly for his turn as the affable village butcher in the post-war comedy Le charcutier de Machonville (1947), his real immortality was forged decades earlier: in 1915 he slipped into the shadowy world of Louis Feuillade’s Les Vampires, and returned the following year for the pulse-racing chapter The Vampires: The Terrible Wedding (1916), sealing his place in the cradle of French serial cinema.
