Biography
Born under the gaslight of 1874, Frederic Sumner traded a quiet Midwestern childhood for the flicker of early movie palaces. Within two years he slipped into three very different skins: the social-climbing outsider of *The Upstart*, the scheming heartbreaker of *Bondwomen*, and the restless heir at the center of *The Turmoil* (all released in 1915–16). Off-screen, his leading lady was Broadway soubrette Maidel Turner, who became his wife and lifelong co-conspirator. Sumner’s final curtain fell on 11 January 1942 in Manhattan, the city that had long served as both his playground and his proving ground.
