Biography
Born beneath the gray winter skies of Liège on 17 February 1855, Frederick de Belleville stepped onto the stage just as the footlights began to flicker toward the silver screen. Within a single whirlwind year—1915—he flashed across three now-legendary one-reelers: *The Daughter of the People*, *A Trade Secret*, and *The New Adventures of J. Rufus Wallingford*, sealing his place in the infancy of American cinema. Off-camera, his romantic life read like a theatrical program: Edith Emmy Mueller, Dorothy Chester, Kate Cleveland (the actress born Kate Massi, 1860-1893), Edith Cornish, and Julia Jacobs Josephs each shared a marquee with him at different times. The curtain finally fell on 25 February 1923 in New York City, the metropolis that had become his second home.
