Biography

Born to the formidable talent of Hortense Scheff Yarger, a prima donna with Vienna's Imperial Opera, Fritzi Scheff's destiny on stage began astonishingly early. At just eight years old, she made her debut, embodying Juliet in Charles Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet" for the Frankfurt Opera company. Her early career saw her grace stages across Germany with various opera companies before her voice resonated for three distinguished years within the hallowed halls of New York's Metropolitan Opera. Her vocal prowess even captivated royalty, earning her a command performance for Queen Victoria herself at Covent Garden. A pivotal shift then led her from grand opera to the effervescent world of musical comedy, where she found her defining moment. It was in "Mlle Modiste," a role meticulously crafted for her by Victor Herbert, that she immortalized herself with the enduring signature song, "Kiss Me Again." Her career trajectory then embraced the vibrant stages of vaudeville, captivating audiences from 1913 to 1930. Even later, her magnetic presence was sought by impresario Billy Rose, leading to memorable appearances at his spectacular during the 1939 New York World's Fair and at the legendary Diamond Horseshoe. Her final curtain call arrived on the television program "This Is Your Life." Throughout her illustrious, if sometimes tumultuous, career, her fiery temperament was as much a part of her legend as her voice.
