Biography
San Diego, 3 August 1893: the day the world gained Gene Marsh, a spark of California sunshine who would trade ocean breezes for silent-film spotlights. Within two whirlwind years she sprinted through three Hal Roach one-reelers—Giving Them Fits (1915), Lonesome Luke Lolls in Luxury (1916), and Luke, the Candy Cut-Up (1916)—spinning slapstick into gold beside Harold Lloyd. When talkies arrived, Marsh slipped away from Hollywood’s glare and kept traveling east until the map ran out; she breathed her last in Singapore on 23 February 1957, closing a life that had flickered brightly, briefly, and on her own terms.
