Biography
George Clarke first drew breath on 11 April 1886 amid the dockside bustle of Poplar, East London. Within three short years he had leapt from stage to celluloid, producing and starring in a flurry of 1919 releases: the light-hearted fantasy *The Double Life of Mr. Alfred Burton*, the marital romp *I Will*, and the racing-circuit comedy *The March Hare*. Off-screen, he shared his life with actress Mamie Watson. Five decades later, on 21 December 1946, Clarke’s final curtain fell in Maidenhead, Berkshire, closing a career that helped shepherd British silent comedy onto the global marquee.
