Biography
A midwinter baby in 1857, George D. Melville first drew breath in Valparaiso, Indiana, long before the town’s name became a railroad punch line. By the 1910s he had traded the calm of the prairie for the flicker of nickelodeon lamps, carving out a corner in early cinema with three one-reel sensations: the missing-man mystery *The Man Who Disappeared* (1914), the social-climbing swirl of *Vanity Fair* (1915), and the moral crucible *The Gates of Eden* (1916). Off-screen, his heart took two turns down the aisle—first with Annie Maud Morris, later with Mamie Conway—before the curtain fell for good on 20 May 1917 in Jersey City, New Jersey.
