Biography
A Midlands boy with a May-Day birthday, George Hassell first drew breath in Birmingham on 4 May 1881. Crossing the Atlantic, he traded soot for studio lights and built a screen résumé that spanned opera-heartbreak in La Bohème (1926), dormitory drama in Girls' Dormitory (1936), and high-seas heroics in Captain Blood (1935). Off-camera he shared his life with Virginia May, the woman whose full maiden name remains a mystery. His final curtain fell on 17 February 1937 in Chatsworth, California, where the Santa Susana foothills became his last stage.
