Biography
Melbourne welcomed George Majeroni on 11 January 1877, and the footlights soon beckoned. By 1914 he was commanding screens worldwide as the tormented Roman in *The Sign of the Cross*, followed a year later by his hypnotic Egyptian priest in *Bella Donna*. Three more seasons passed before he appeared as the gambler who outwits fate in *Beating the Odds* (1919). Tuberculosis drew him to Saranac Lake’s crisp mountain air, but the cure failed; he died there on 5 August 1924, leaving behind a trio of silent-era performances still capable of stealing a modern viewer’s breath.
