Biography

George Marlo greeted the world on 2 January 1884 amid the clang of Manhattan’s elevated trains. Within months he was stealing scenes in makeshift living-room plays, and by 1915 the camera had found him: first as the steadfast brother in *The Mill on the Floss*, then the elusive sculptor in *Inspiration*. Two years later he swapped brooding for slapstick, donning an apron and a temper in *Pots-and-Pans Peggy*, proving a comedian’s timing could lurk behind leading-man eyes. After the lights dimmed he slipped back into New York’s restless streets, living quietly until 5 February 1970, when the city that launched him became his final set.
