Biography
On 3 March 1873, in the Pomeranian town of Stolp—today the Polish city of Słupsk—Gertrud Arnold first drew breath. The stage soon beckoned, and she answered with a career that flickered memorably across silent screens: in 1914 she moved audiences in Ein Kindesherz, and a decade later she embodied the mythic fierceness of Queen Ute in Fritz Lang’s twin epics, Die Nibelungen: Siegfried and its companion Kriemhild’s Revenge, both released in 1924. Off-camera, she shared her life with actor-director Heinrich Brandt. Her final curtain fell in Berlin on 11 January 1931.
