Biography
Born in 1858, Gilbert Ely stepped from small-town Indiana onto flickering screens when movies still whispered in silence. Between 1915’s crime-mystery *The White Mask* and the same year’s *The Road o’ Strife*, he carved a niche as a dependable face of early cinema, resurfacing again in 1919’s family-rivalry drama *Brothers Divided*. Off-camera, his leading roles continued: first with Marie A. Bailey, then with stage beauty Anne La Vallee. The curtain closed on 4 April 1920 in Osgood, Indiana, the same soil that had once launched his journey into America’s newborn dream-factory.
