Biography
Born in 1869, Giovanni Enrico Vidali stepped from the Adriatic air of late-19th-century Italy straight onto flickering screens. In 1913 he conjured ancient terror as director of The Last Days of Pompeii, then traded lava for espionage with 1919’s Enigma and stitched wartime suspense into 1914’s Croce nera. The curtain fell on 3 July 1937, but the light he trained on early cinema still glows frame by fragile frame.
