Biography
Gita de Barros arrived in the world on Christmas Eve 1897, Rome’s frost still clinging to the stones outside her cradle. She grew up to trade lines with lights, scripting and starring in Brazil’s early talkies—1948’s Esta é Fina, 1949’s double bill of Eu Quero é Movimento and Pra Lá de Boa—each frame crackling with her restless wit. Off-screen she shared her life, and a surname, with pioneering director Luiz de Barros. Nearly a century after her Roman debut, she took her final bow in Brazil, 1994.
