Biography
A cornfield kid from Washington, Iowa, drew his first breath on 28 September 1886 and, by the age of silent flickers, had traded prairie dust for klieg lights. Between the 1914 morality tale The Toll of Mammon and the 1942 laboratory shocker The Mad Monster, Gordon De Main slipped into dozens of faces—sometimes a gunslinger, sometimes a genteel rogue—yet sealed his screen legend as the quick-draw justice of 1932’s The Western Code. Off-camera he claimed a quieter leading role opposite actress Octavia Handworth, his wife until the final fade-out. The curtain fell for good on 5 March 1954 in Los Angeles County, California, closing the reel on a journeyman who helped wire the DNA of early Hollywood.
