Biography

Born beneath the snow-laden eaves of Ann Arbor in January 1860, Grace Henderson grew up to trade Michigan winters for the flicker of kerosene-lit stages and, later, the sputter of early movie arc-lamps. Between 1909 and 1912 she stepped before the hand-cranked cameras of the Biograph Company, lending her wary elegance to A Corner in Wheat, slipping into mischief for A Midnight Cupid, and unraveling silk-clad scandal in Tragedy of the Dress Suit. Off-screen she shaped stories with the same pen that signed her name to theater bills across the country, and at home she shared life—and a surname—with fellow actor David Henderson. Nearly nine decades after that first Michigan snowfall, she drew her final breath in New York City on 30 October 1944, leaving the projector’s beam a little dimmer without her.
