Biography
A winter’s day in 1882, Manhattan: Gus Alexander draws his first breath amid the clang of the city’s elevated rails. Within three decades he slips in front of the camera, trading the sidewalk bustle for flickering celluloid. In rapid-fire succession he both acts in and shepherds three 1911 slapstick one-reelers—Mutt and Jeff Join the Opera Co., Mutt and Jeff and the Goldstein Burglary, Mutt and Jeff and the Lady Stenographer—turning the knock-about comic duo into early screen favorites. Producer, performer, and quiet pioneer, Alexander remains a heartbeat of nickelodeon-era New York until his own final curtain falls back home in Manhattan on 29 September 1936.
