Biography
June 15, 1882, Washington, D.C. welcomed a restless dreamer named Guy Coombs. Within a decade he had swapped the capital’s marble corridors for the flicker of nickelodeon lights, carving a niche on both sides of the camera. Between 1914 and 1917 he steered history-bent lenses toward revolution-era swamps in *The Swamp Fox*, scaled cliff-top ramparts for *Wolfe; or, the Conquest of Quebec*, and turned a teenager’s scribbles into silver-screen mischief with *Bab’s Diary*. Off-set, he claimed the heart of Swedish-born star Anna Q. Nilsson, their marriage a headline that rivaled any studio press release. On December 29, 1947, the sun set over Los Angeles, closing the final reel on Coombs’ 65-year adventure.
