Biography
September 7, 1879: the tiny state of Delaware welcomed Hampton Del Ruth, a boy who would grow up to juggle scripts, budgets, and egos in Hollywood’s silent-to-sound shuffle. By 1922 he was shepherding The Marriage Chance through the maze of early production, then spun the risqué comedy Naughty into theaters five years later. In 1931 he strapped on the badge of production manager for Defenders of the Law, proving he could steer cops, crooks, and cameras with equal calm. Off-set, two marriages—first to Alta Allen, later to Helen Carlyle—kept his story as busy as his shooting schedules. On May 15, 1958, the final curtain fell in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, closing a life that had helped shape the grammar of American movies from flicker to talkie.
