Biography

London welcomed Harold Entwistle on 5 September 1865, and by the early 1900s he had traded foggy Thames-side streets for the flicker of silent-film sets. Between 1914 and 1919 he shaped stories both behind and in front of the camera, guiding Salomy Jane through California gold-country dust, coaxing laughs from Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch, and dissecting marriage in The Divorcee. Off-screen, his leading lady was Jane Ross, his wife and frequent collaborator. Six decades after his first breath, Entwistle’s final curtain fell in Hollywood on 1 April 1944, leaving three surviving reels—and countless memories—as his passport to immortality.
