Biography
A Thames-side baby in 1874, Harry Buss first drew breath amid the clamour of Strand, London, and spent the next forty-eight years turning that breath into performance. Before the cameras of the mid-1910s he stepped, juggling two trades: in front of the lens he animated barn-burning rebels in Barnaby Rudge (1915), stitched wartime satire as the harried hero of Sister Susie’s Sewing Shirts for Soldiers (1915), and landed comic chaos in Some Fish! (1916); behind it he called the shots as director. The curtain fell on 22 December 1922 in Stoke Newington, the same city that had watched him begin.
