Biography
A Pimlico boy born on 25 August 1890, Hayford Hobbs stepped from the London streets into the flicker of early British cinema. Between 1917 and 1927 he moved in front of—and sometimes behind—the camera, guiding The Gay Lord Quex through its paces, letting Hindle Wakes unfold in Lancashire gloom, and later sending The Luck of the Navy across the screen. Sixty-six years after his first breath, he drew his last in Ealing on 10 January 1957, leaving behind the images that still reel through British film history.
