Biography

Boston welcomed Helen Strickland on 12 September 1863, and the footlights soon claimed her. Over the next seven decades she lent her wit and steel to the fledgling screen, slipping from Becky Sharp in Vanity Fair (1915) to the haunted corridors of The Ghost of Old Morro (1917) and, two decades later, to the razor-edged society of The Scoundrel (1935). Off-camera she shared her life with fellow actor Robert Conness. The curtain fell for good on 11 January 1938 in New York City, but the flicker of her performances keeps her vividly alive.
