Biography

London, 1867: the curtain rises on Henry Hallam, a city boy who would trade gas-lit streets for klieg lights. Within a handful of years he slipped before the camera, lending his angular grace to the abolitionist epic Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1913), then pivoting to the shadow-laced melodrama The Evil Thereof (1916) and the satin-and-secrets fantasy Gloria’s Romance that same year. Off-screen, his leading lady was Josephine Stanton, the velvet-voiced opera singer who became his wife. The final fade-out came on 9 November 1921, but the flickering evidence of Hallam’s brief, bright arc still dances across silent reels today.
