Biography
Berlin, 30 November 1858: Herbert Paulmüller enters the world in the gray pulse of the imperial capital. Over the next eight decades he will haunt the city’s stages and screens, slipping into roles that outlive him. Audiences first laugh with him in Her Majesty Love (1931), then double-take at his quick-change brilliance in Victor and Victoria (1933), and finally watch him juggle crowns and IOUs in The Grand Duke’s Finances (1934). On 25 October 1939, almost exactly where he began, the curtain drops; Berlin keeps breathing, but its lights dim a shade.
