Biography
A summer’s day—9 July 1885—brought Hesperia into the world in the hill-ringed town of Bertinoro, Emilia-Romagna. By her early thirties she had stepped before the camera and become the burning heartbeat of silent-era cinema: Alexandre Dumas’s doomed courtesan in *Camille* (1915), the tormented soul of *La fibra del dolore* (1919), and the spirited offspring opposite Madame Sans Gêne in the 1921 hit *Il figlio di Madame Sans Gêne*. Off-screen, she shared her life with director Baldassarre Negroni, her husband and frequent collaborator. Rome, the city that had applauded her on countless premier nights, became her final stage when she died there on 30 May 1959.
