Biography
Louisville, Kentucky, greeted Hobart Henley on 23 November 1887, and from that day forward he seemed destined to trade the Ohio River for klieg lights. First stepping before the camera as an actor, he quickly pivoted to the director’s chair, shaping silent-era stories that crackled across nickelodeon screens. His fingerprints are on the breezy marital skirmish Society Snobs (1921), the moral maze of Parentage (1917), and the prizefighting fable The Abysmal Brute (1923). Off-set, he shared his life with actress Corinne Barker. Four-and-a-half decades after the talkies arrived, Henley’s final curtain fell on 22 May 1964 in Beverly Hills, California, closing a career that had helped turn flickers into an art form.
