Biography
A Hoosier by birth, Horace Newman first drew breath in 1863 amid the brick-lined streets of Anderson, Indiana. Within a decade of the new century he had stepped before the camera, lending his presence to three early landmarks of American film: the vanished-life mystery *The Man Who Disappeared* (1914), the sentimental sweep of *The Old Homestead* (1915), and the moral tightrope walked in *Saints and Sinners* (1916). More than half a century after those silent frames were struck, Newman’s own story closed on 13 November 1947 in the restless heart of New York City.
