Biography
Born in Reading, Berkshire in 1862, Hubert Willis first drew breath the same year Lewis Carroll dreamed up Wonderland. By the flicker of early cinema he had traded market-town streets for gas-lit sets, slipping into the skin of Dr. Watson opposite Eille Norwood’s hawk-sharp Sherlock in 1921’s *The Hound of the Baskervilles*. Two years earlier he had peeled back the velvet curtains of *Lady Audley’s Secret*, and in 1916 he wore the heavy iron of *Altar Chains*. Off-camera he answered only to “Mrs. Hubert Willis,” the woman who shared both his surname and his life. The final curtain fell on 13 December 1933 in Bedford Park, London, leaving behind celluloid ghosts that still pad across the moor.
