Biography
Belfast in 1873 delivered Hugh Jeffrey to the world, and from that Irish cradle he stepped onto the stage, trading the clang of shipyards for the hush of footlights. Within three short years he condensed a career into flickers of celluloid: in 1916 he breathed life into The Pretenders, followed it a year later with His Father’s Son, and in 1918 slipped beneath the shadows of Under Suspicion. On 13 January 1927, the California sun that had lured so many dreamers set on him in Hollywood, closing the scene on a life measured in reels rather than years.
