Biography
Born 10 July 1891 in the coal-country quiet of Pennsylvania, Hylda Hollis traded small-town horizons for the flicker of early Hollywood. Between 1915 and 1916 she darted across the screen in three fast-paced serial sensations: the mind-bending mystery of The Black Box, the deep-sea cliff-hangers of The Secret of the Submarine, and the glittering melodrama of Jewel. Off-camera she sharpened stories the way other people sharpened pencils, earning credits as both actress and writer. Edward Sloman, actor-turned-director, became her husband and lifelong scene partner. She exited the world’s stage on 9 December 1961 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, leaving behind a trail of nitrate dreams and a name that once lit up silent-era marquees.
