Biography
Carson City, 31 July 1866: the silver-town air crackled with heat the day Ina Hammer drew her first breath. By 1915 she had traded the desert’s dust for klieg lights, slipping into characters as textured as ore—first the nerve-jangling mystery The House of Fear, then the switchboard suspense of Crossed Wires. A year later she commanded Shakespeare’s storm-swept moors as the Fool in King Lear, her weather-worn wit flickering across silent screens. Off-camera, she wed stage veteran Ira Hards; together they navigated Broadway’s shifting tides. In 1953 she closed her final act in the green hush of Brattleboro, Vermont, departing on 9 August, her reel of memories spooled forever in the archives of early film.
