Biography
A spring baby born in Milwaukee on May 4, 1898, Isolde C. Illian traded Wisconsin winters for the klieg lights of early Hollywood. Between 1915 and 1916 she stepped before the hand-cranked cameras three times—first as Maggie Tulliver in The Mill on the Floss, then carrying A Man’s Sins and rounding the emotional arc in The Reunion. Off-screen she said “I do” to playwright-producer Frank Mandel. Sixty-five autumns later, on November 5, 1963, she drew her final breath in Beverly Hills, California, closing the scene on a life that flickered briefly but brightly across the silent screen.
