Biography
Jackie Saunders arrived in the world on October 6, 1892, amid the trolley bells of Philadelphia. At twenty-two she stepped before the cameras for the first time in 1914’s THE WILL O’ THE WISP, and for the next decade she rarely left them, slipping into role after role with quiet competence. No studio built a publicity circus around her; her face was pleasant, memorable without stopping traffic, and her gifts were the steady, reliable kind that kept directors calling. When the curtain came down on THE PEOPLE VS. NANCY PRESTON in 1925, so did her screen life—she walked away from the lights and never came back. Four decades later, on July 14, 1954, she took her last breath in sun-drenched Palm Springs, the final scene of a sixty-two-year story.
