Biography

Before the word “blockbuster” had even been minted, James B. Ross was already slipping through the flicker of early cinema—first as one of the river-rats battling along the Mississippi in 1913’s The River Pirates, then trading his keelboat for a Continental uniform to harry British patrols alongside Francis Marion in 1914’s The Swamp Fox, and finally tangling with obsession and opium smoke in 1916’s The Lotus Woman. Three titles, three short years, one silhouette that vanished as quickly as it flashed across America’s nickelodeon screens.
