Biography

Long before the camera rolled, James Cassady’s voice carried across Delaware Bay, floating from the deck of the Republic as it steamed between Cape May and Philadelphia. The ship’s youngest deckhand-turned-crooner had no idea the footlights would soon replace the foghorns. Ed Harrigan spotted the kid’s comic timing, signed him, and Cassady spent the next quarter-century barn-storming with Thomas Shea’s troupe—first in melodramas, then in the rapid-fire sketches Shea recast as vaudeville. When movies beckoned in 1914, Cassady traded live applause for flicker, logging nearly thirty silent parts before the boards lured him back two years later. In 1928, still touring with Donald Kerr and Effie Watson on the Schubert circuit, he stepped offstage in Spokane, surrendered to pneumonia that night, and never heard the curtain rise again.
