Biography
A Connecticut spring brought James Griswold into the world on 30 April 1882, amid the clatter of New Britain’s brass factories. Within a dozen years he had traded factory whistles for footlights, stepping before cameras just as Hollywood was learning to walk. In 1914 he rode the Wyoming range as a bold ranch hand in *The Virginian*, and the next year he strode into the Sierra dust for *The Girl of the Golden West*. Audiences of the fledgling feature knew him for those two frontier epics; then, like a reel that ends abruptly, his screen story faded. On 4 October 1935 the sun set over Glendale, California, closing his personal curtain at fifty-three.
