Biography

Jane Wolfe’s journey began among the Pennsylvania Dutch, but the gaslights of Manhattan soon lured her eastward in the 1890s, trading barn-raisings for greasepaint. By the dawn of cinema she had slipped in front of hand-cranked cameras, lending her sharp-eyed presence to more than ninety one-reelers and features between 1910 and 1920, becoming a familiar face of the flickering era. Then the screen dimmed: her final roles trickled out and the studios forgot her name. Instead of retreating, she opened a stranger door. In 1918 she posted her first letter to Aleister Crowley, the notorious English magus; two years later she sailed from a sun-baked Los Angeles pier to the Sicilian port of Cefalù and climbed the hill to Crowley’s cactus-ringed Abbey of Thelema. There she shaved her head, took the magical motto Soror Estai, and learned the alphabet of sex, hashish, and ritual that Crowley called Thelema. She stayed until Mussolini’s police shuttered the colony, then carried the scarlet flame back to California, quietly gathering students in Hollywood bungalows and hillside cottages. For three more decades she lectured, initiated, and kept the Beast’s voice alive in American accents until her own final curtain fell in 1958.
