Margaret Elizabeth Leisenring entered the world on a summer morning in 1906, the same day the Sierra sun baked the hills above Placerville, California. Her father, Dr. Luther Leisenring, stitched bodies back together in the operating room; his daughter preferred to stitch daydreams together on the Berkeley campus, where she answered to “Jean Stuart” and collected friends the way other girls collected dance cards. She spoke French at the Monday club, built imaginary worlds with the Little Theater troupe, and in the spring of 1926 watched Hollywood roll cameras across the quad for The Campus Flirt. A casting scout pointed at the laughing brunette with the sorority-poster smile—suddenly Jean was an extra, then a contract player, then a commuter on the red-car rails to Universal City. Producers branded her “the perfect college girl—alive in close-up, wholesome in long shot,” and Wesley Ruggles plugged her into breezy two-reelers called The Collegians. Books versus backlots? The question answered itself. On the afternoon of November 23, 1926, she saddled up with friends, cantered across rain-slick pavement, and met the moment that erased every future frame: a horse’s hoof skated, Jean flew, and by nightfall a cerebral hemorrhage had closed the picture.
