Biography
A crisp autumn day—28 September 1887—welcomed Jean Toulout into the swirl of Parisian boulevards. Before long he was trading the city’s cobblestones for camera lights, carving a niche on silent screens as both performer and scenarist. Audiences remember his haunted eyes in Monte Cristo (1929), his swashbuckling dash through Mathias Sandorf (1921), and the sorrow he carried as Javert in Les misérables (1925). Off-set, he shared his life with actress Yvette Andréyor, their partnership as storied as any reel romance. Toulout took his final bow back where he began, departing Paris on 23 October 1962, leaving behind flickering images that still whisper his name.
